Is cigarette smoke bad for cats?
anonymous asked:
I’m trying to quit but both me and my roommate smoke. We don’t blow smoke on the cat but I was wondering if second hand smoke is bad for the cat.

If second hand smoke is bad for humans, I assure you, it is bad for cats. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that dogs in smoking households had a 60 percent greater risk of lung cancer; a different study published in the same journal showed that long-nosed dogs, such as collies or greyhounds, were twice as likely to develop nasal cancer if they lived with smokers.
And in yet another study, vets from Tufts University found that cats whose owners smoked were three times as likely to develop lymphoma, the most common feline cancer.
Hope this helps!

Yes it is bad for cats. They can get lung problems just like humans. Plus there lungs are much smaller than ours. Since cats do not live to be 60, they will not develop the different types of lung issues of people that have been exposed for years to cigarette smoke.

Cigarette smoke is bad for EVERYTHING that breathes.
Do you know what’s in that crap? Tons of different toxins, including rat poison! Rat Poison!
So yes, if you smoke and own a pet, your pet’s health is going to be affected by secondhand smoke.

Yes, its really bad and can cause death. Remember cats lungs are very small and just like humans cats will die at a very young age if around smoke. Smoke outside, its really not that hard. And tell your roommate to do it as well.

It probably is considering it can kill people just think of what it can do to a little kitty.if anything, it will probably shorten its life span soto help stop this just smoke less around the cat and more outside or even just out a window.

Yes it can cause all kinds of health problems. I stained my cats teeth by smoking around her. The vet knew I smoked just by looking at them and they had to be cleaned. That’s the mildest of it, you can cause a number of health problems by smoking around your cat.

It’s very bad for cats. I recently read a five-year study in a vet magazine that found that cats who live with a smoker have a 5x greater chance of developing lymphoma and a 9 x greater chance of developing mouth cancer, than cats in a non-smoking household, and also a much greater chance of developing feline asthma, which is very difficult to treat.

Second-hand smoke isn’t good for anyone & there is evidence that cats who are exposed to cigarette smoke have a higher rate of lymphoma than cats who live in a smoke-free environment. I learned this in a Women’s Health class & it almost brought me to tears– we lost a wonderful 14-year-old cat to lymphoma & I had been a smoker until he was about 5 or 6 years old.
I know how hard it is to stop smoking. Good luck with it.
